Travel Seminars and Support for Graduate Student Field Research

The department conducts graduate seminars with a significant travel component that complements classroom and library experience. In addition, the department offers its own travel grants, including the Thomas W. Lyman Memorial Travel Fund and the Abrams Family Foundation travel fund to support dissertation research. Travel resources are also available from the Laney Graduate School. 

Summer Archaeological Field Research at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, Samothrace

Students have the opportunity to participate in archaeological field research at the ancient Greek Sanctuary of the Great Gods of Samothrace, place of the mystery cult of the Megaloi Theoi and one of the most important Hellenistic sanctuaries in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Michael C. Carlos Museum

The Michael C. Carlos Museum constitutes an invaluable resource for the graduate program in art history. Its collections include approximately 17,000 works of art from ancient Egypt and the Near East, classical Greek and Rome, the ancient Americas, Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, as well as European and American drawings, prints, and photographs. The exhibition schedule includes major international and traveling exhibitions, in addition to smaller student-generated displays. A number of museological opportunities are available to graduate students including curatorial assistantships, directed studies, and museum internships.

Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library

The Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, & Rare Book Library collects and connects stories of human experience, promotes access and learning. The library has important collections of rare books and other materials closely related to research interests across the Art History Department.

Pitts Theology Library

Pitts is internationally renowned for its rare book and archival collections. Notable rare book holdings include the following: The Richard C. Kessler Reformation Collection, the largest collection of Reformation-related materials in North America; manuscript collections of John and Charles Wesley, part of one of the foremost collections of Wesleyana in the world; the Pitts hymnody and psalmody collection, the largest holdings of hymnals in North America outside of the Library of Congress; and periodicals, monographs, and archives related to African Christianity.

The High Museum of Art

The Art History Department maintains a relationship with the High Museum of Art in midtown Atlanta. Its collections feature European and American fine and decorative arts of the fourteenth through twentieth centuries, African art, and contemporary western art. Additionally, the museum hosts several international exhibitions annually.
